THIRD AND FINAL INDEPENDENT KINDERGARTEN LEARNING PROJECT
For our next project, students will be given an option between two choices; “Artists” and “Science Fair Experiments”. Please view the components for each and select one of your choice.
Artists
Students will research and select an artist (i.e. a painter, sculptor, photographer, illustrator, etc.) of their choice. Each student will be responsible for presenting a mini biography of their artist in a way they choose. Presentations will be expected to include examples of the artist’s work, along with a replica created by the student.
Science Fair Experiments
Students must use the scientific method to solve a problem. The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by making observations and doing experiments.
The steps of the scientific method are to:
1. Ask a Question
2. Do Background Research - Read books, visit websites, interview someone, etc. Students must have at least THREE resources (Wikipedia doesn’t count). *Construct a Hypothesis - Make your best prediction (guess) about what you think is going to happen. Use the format: "If _____, then ____ will happen."
4. Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment (Record each step with pictures, video, and/or drawings)
5. Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion - What worked and what didn’t? Use drawings or any type of chart to show what happened.*Communicate Your Results - Was your hypothesis correct? Write about your results.
It is important for your experiment to be a fair test. A "fair test" is when you change only one factor (variable) and keep everything else the same.

The fashion each student presents their information in is limitless and students are encouraged to be creative. At this point I will expect that student will use ways to present information other than a poster board. It is expected that through this project each student will be able to demonstrate the following:
Project Proposal
Student Name: ____________________________________________________ Project Due: May 30th, 2017
Project Topic: (circle one) Artists Science Fair Project
Name of Artist to research: _____________________________________________________________ OR
Science Question: _______________________________________________________________________________________________
If ______________________________________________________, then ______________________________________________________ will happen.
Who will help me with my project? ______________________________________________________
Project proposals should be returned no later than Monday April 17, 2017. Project presentations will be scheduled for the week of May 29th (beginning the day after Memorial Day) using sign up genius.
These projects will be evaluated including the following standards:
Kindergarten
I CAN use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to tell the topic and some information about the topic (W.K.2).
I CAN work with adults and or/classmates to use different digital tools to produce and publish writing pieces (W.K.6).
I CAN recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question with help from adults (W.K.8).
I CAN add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail. (SL.K.5)
I CAN speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly (SL.K.6)
Please remember that projects are to be STUDENT-LED and created, with adult supervision… The student should be able to read and understand the written words. Final drafts and note cards should be created by the student, unless it is overly time consuming ☺. If they cannot write the words, parents/guardians may write the words the child has stated. This will be our last assigned kindergarten independent learning project so please enjoy it and make the most of the learning experience and time. I have also included my grading rubric below for your reference. Please be sure to turn in a project reflection 24 hours after your student presents. The reflection is a very important part of the learning process and technically projects are not completed without this.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Please have fun and if possible make it a family learning experience!
